What Is Periodontal Disease and Why Should You Address It?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a progressive condition that affects the tissues supporting your teeth. Without proper treatment, it can lead to tooth loss, infections, and even systemic health complications.

  • Early Signs: Red, swollen, or bleeding gums are often the first indicators of periodontal disease. Persistent bad breath and gum recession may also signal underlying issues.
  • Progression: As the condition advances, pockets form between the teeth and gums, allowing bacteria to accumulate and cause further damage. Bone and tissue loss can lead to loose teeth and eventual tooth loss.
  • Treatment Options: Our practice offers both conservative and advanced treatments, including scaling and root planing, laser-assisted therapy, and osseous surgery, to halt disease progression and restore gum health.

Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that does not resolve on its own. If left untreated, it can lead to:

  • Gum recession and bone loss
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Tooth loss, requiring dentures or implants
  • Increased risk of systemic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes

Early intervention is key to preventing further damage and avoiding costly future treatments.

Not all patients require surgical intervention. In early stages, gum disease can be managed with non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), periodontal maintenance, and laser therapy (LANAP). If the disease is more advanced, surgical options may be recommended to restore gum and bone health.

Yes, periapical X-rays are necessary to detect periodontal disease and bone loss that may not be visible during a clinical exam. If your general dentist has recently taken X-rays, you can have them sent to our office. Otherwise, our team will take updated X-rays to ensure we have accurate imaging for diagnosis and treatment planning.
