How is LANAP different from traditional gum surgery?
LANAP uses the PerioLase® MVP-7 laser to remove diseased tissue and bacteria without scalpels or sutures. Traditional surgery requires cutting the gums and placing stitches, which leads to a longer and more uncomfortable recovery. LANAP is minimally invasive — most patients return to normal activity within 24 hours and experience significantly less post-procedure discomfort. It also stimulates the body’s natural ability to regenerate gum tissue and bone, something traditional surgery does not accomplish.
Does LANAP hurt?
LANAP is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Afterward, most patients report only mild soreness or sensitivity — far less than what typically follows conventional gum surgery. A soft-food diet is recommended for the first few days, and any discomfort can generally be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Dr. Reich’s team will walk you through exactly what to expect at your pre-treatment consultation.
Am I a good candidate for LANAP?
LANAP is appropriate for patients with moderate to severe periodontal disease who want to avoid traditional surgery. Ideal candidates include people with bleeding, swollen, or receding gums, those with loose teeth due to gum disease, and patients with health conditions — such as diabetes, hemophilia, or use of blood thinners — that make traditional surgery riskier. A consultation with Dr. Reich will determine whether LANAP is the right approach for your specific case.
How many LANAP sessions will I need?
Most patients complete LANAP in two treatment visits, typically one to two weeks apart. Each visit addresses half of the mouth, and follow-up appointments ensure proper healing and gum reattachment. After the active treatment phase, you will transition into a periodontal maintenance schedule — typically every three to four months — to protect your results long-term.
Does insurance cover LANAP treatment?
Many dental insurance plans cover LANAP as a periodontal treatment, since it addresses the same disease that traditional surgery would treat. Coverage varies by plan, so our team will work with your insurer to verify benefits and submit claims on your behalf before treatment begins. For any remaining out-of-pocket costs, we offer financing through Cherry Financing with flexible payment plans.
Can LANAP save teeth that might otherwise be extracted?
Yes — this is one of the most significant benefits of LANAP. By eliminating the bacterial infection and stimulating bone regeneration around the roots, LANAP can stabilize teeth that have experienced significant bone loss. Teeth that might otherwise require extraction can often be preserved when treated in time. Dr. Daniel Reich, a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and Director and Associate Professor of Periodontics at Touro College of Dental Medicine, has extensive experience using LANAP to save teeth and restore long-term gum health.
