Navigating dental insurance for periodontal care can feel overwhelming, especially when you are dealing with an urgent gum health concern on top of it. Coverage varies by plan, procedures are often categorized differently than general dental services, and it is not always clear what you will owe until after treatment. Understanding how your benefits work before your appointment can help you feel more prepared and confident moving forward. According to the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute, an estimated 42% of adults over age 30 have untreated periodontal disease, often because the path to care feels financially uncertain.
At Middlesex Periodontics & Dental Implants, PC, we want to make that path as clear as possible. We proudly participate with Delta Dental Premier and Cigna PPO, and we file claims on behalf of patients in many other dental PPO plans as well. Our team is here to walk you through how we handle insurance, what you can expect, and how we work to keep your out-of-pocket costs manageable.
Most dental insurance plans provide some coverage for periodontal treatment, though the specifics depend on your carrier, your plan tier, and whether your procedure is categorized as preventive, basic, or major. Our team is experienced in communicating with insurance carriers on your behalf, and we take steps to help you understand your benefits before you ever sit in the chair. As a courtesy, we do the following for every patient:
It is always helpful to bring your most current insurance information to your first appointment. Keeping your records up to date allows us to calculate your benefits accurately and make sure you receive the full coverage you are entitled to.
We are proud to participate with Delta Dental Premier and Cigna PPO. These are two of the most widely used dental benefit plans in New Jersey, and our in-network status means that patients on these plans may benefit from negotiated rates and reduced out-of-pocket costs for covered services. We also work with many other dental PPO plans. While we encourage you to call your carrier directly to confirm your specific coverage before your visit, our team is happy to help you sort through the details and answer questions about what your plan may cover for gum disease treatment and other periodontal procedures.
Coverage percentages and annual maximums differ from plan to plan, and some procedures may require prior authorization or supporting documentation from our office. Many PPO plans include some level of coverage for periodontal maintenance visits, scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), bone regeneration and grafting procedures, gum grafting and soft tissue procedures, and osseous surgery. We are accustomed to working through prior authorization requirements and will provide the necessary records to support your claim.
We understand that even with good insurance coverage, some treatment costs may exceed what your plan covers. For patients facing a remaining balance, we offer financing through Cherry Financing. Cherry offers flexible payment plan options that allow you to break your treatment cost into manageable monthly payments, so that financial concerns do not stand between you and the care you need. Please note that we do not accept CareCredit.
To learn more or apply, you can visit Cherry’s website directly at pay.withcherry.com/middlesex-periodontics–dental-implants-pc. If you have questions about financing eligibility or what options may work best for your situation, our team is happy to help.
