Crestal approach (internal sinus lift) — A minimally invasive technique where the implant site is prepared using specialized instruments that gently push the sinus floor upward. Graft material is placed through the same access point. This approach is appropriate when at least 5–6mm of bone height is present and fewer implants are needed.

In both cases, bone graft material — sourced from the patient (autograft), a donor (allograft), or a biocompatible synthetic alternative (alloplast) — is placed to fill the elevated space. Over several months, this material integrates with the patient’s natural bone through osseointegration, creating a strong, stable platform for implant placement. Depending on bone volume and the approach used, dental implant placement can sometimes be performed the same day as the sinus lift. If additional healing time is required, implants are placed after the graft has fully integrated. What to Expect After Sinus Elevation Surgery?

Recovery after sinus elevation is typically straightforward, though mild swelling, congestion, and discomfort are common in the first several days. Key care guidelines during recovery include:

Avoid blowing your nose forcefully or sneezing with excessive pressure, as this can disrupt the elevated membrane.
