For many people living with gum disease, the thought of surgery brings one image to mind: scalpels, stitches, and weeks of recovery. LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery changes that picture entirely. This FDA-cleared protocol uses a precise laser to remove diseased tissue and harmful bacteria from around the teeth without cutting the gums, making it a compelling option for patients who need real treatment but want to avoid the discomfort of traditional surgery.

At Middlesex Periodontics & Dental Implants, PC, serving patients in Sayreville, NJ, and the surrounding Middlesex County area, Dr. Daniel Reich offers LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery as part of a comprehensive approach to periodontal care. Dr. Reich is a board-certified periodontist and Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology with over 25 years of experience treating gum disease and restoring oral health. His training at SUNY Stony Brook and decades of clinical practice make him well-positioned to deliver this advanced laser therapy.

What Is LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery?

LANAP® stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. It is currently the only laser-based protocol cleared by the FDA for true periodontal regeneration, meaning it can promote the growth of new bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament in areas damaged by disease. The procedure uses a specialized laser to target diseased tissue and bacteria inside the periodontal pocket while leaving healthy tissue intact.

Traditional gum disease treatment for moderate to severe periodontitis has typically involved cutting the gums back, cleaning the roots, and suturing the tissue closed. LANAP® achieves similar goals through a minimally invasive approach. The laser fiber, about the width of three human hairs, is placed gently between the gum and tooth. It selectively targets and removes the infected lining of the pocket, then creates a stable fibrin clot that seals the area and supports new tissue attachment.

Am I a Good Candidate for LANAP®?

LANAP® is designed for patients with moderate-to-severe periodontitis. If you have been told you need gum surgery, or if your gum disease has not responded adequately to non-surgical options like scaling and root planing, LANAP® may be the right path forward.

Patients who are particularly well-suited to this treatment include those who are apprehensive about traditional surgical methods, those who need to return to normal activities quickly, and those who may be on blood thinners. Because the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser does not require cutting or suturing, recovery time is typically much shorter than with conventional surgery. Many patients return to their regular routines within a day or two of treatment.

According to research published in the Journal of Periodontal and Implant Science, LANAP® surgery demonstrated improvements in clinical periodontal parameters in patients with generalized moderate-to-severe chronic periodontitis, supporting its use as a standalone laser-based surgical approach.

What to Expect During and After LANAP® Treatment

LANAP® treatment is typically completed over two appointments, with one side of the mouth treated per session. Each appointment takes approximately two to three hours and is performed under local anesthesia. Because the gums are not cut or pulled back, patients generally experience significantly less discomfort than they would after traditional flap surgery.

After treatment, you may notice some sensitivity and light swelling, but most patients find recovery far more manageable than expected. Following the post-treatment care instructions provided at your appointment is important for allowing the tissue to heal properly and supporting the regenerative process. Consistent periodontal maintenance appointments after LANAP® are also essential to protecting the results long term.

LANAP® vs. Traditional Gum Surgery

One of the most common questions patients have is how LANAP® stacks up against scaling and root planing and osseous surgery. The key differences come down to invasiveness, recovery, and regenerative potential. Traditional surgery requires incisions and sutures and may cause the gum line to recede somewhat after healing. LANAP® preserves the gum tissue and, in the right cases, stimulates the body’s natural ability to regenerate the structures that hold teeth in place.

It is also worth noting that LANAP® pricing starts at $2,500 per quadrant. While insurance often does not cover the procedure, many patients find the reduced recovery time and the minimally invasive nature of the treatment well worth the investment. Cherry Financing options are available to help make treatment accessible.
